Hippopotamus for Christmas

One of my mother's favorite family stories to tell on me is about the year I didn't get a hippopotamus for Christmas.
"Mom and Me"
One of my mother's favorite family stories to tell on me is about the year I didn't get a hippopotamus for Christmas.

I was barely 2 years old at the time. When I came downstairs on Christmas morning, I looked around at all the wonderful presents and asked, "Where's my hippopotamus?"

Seems I took seriously the song, "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" and, apparently, only a hippopotamus would do.

Several years ago my mom came to visit and presented me with a little collectible hippo with a baby hippo on her back. Name of the piece? "Mom and Me."

I finally had my hippopotamus.

It was worth the wait.

Because of the smiles the story always brings (at least to my mom and me) the "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" song has always been one of my favorites.

Did you know that it was a 10-year-old girl named Gayla Peevey who recorded the popular, original version in 1953?  Even though I was just a toddler, apparently I had the song memorized in no time.

Here's a cute version of the song that I found on YouTube.

So tell me, is a hippopotamus on your child's Christmas list?

Search for a hippopotamus on eBay to make your child's Christmas complete!

P.S. Have you seen these photos of a baby hippo swimming with its mom? So adorable!

UPDATE: Now my mom has a hippopotamus! Read the rest of the story here.
