Two Things to Love About Winter

I'm definitely not a cold-weather person. Here are two things, however, that I truly love about winter.
First I'd like to make it clear that I'm not a cold-weather person. I'm much more likely to complain about near-freezing temperatures than I do about the 100 degree days that are common in the summertime. There are two things, however, that I truly love about winter.

1. The night sky. Last night I took Daisy out for her nightly "necessary." As I stepped to the edge of the porch and looked up, the view almost took my breath away. The night sky was clear, that clear that you only see during the winter, and the stars looked so much bigger and brighter than normal. Orion's belt was absolutely gleaming! I could have gazed at the sky for hours - except that the temperature was hovering near the single-digit mark. Brrr!

2. The longer days. I've always found it very interesting and rather amusing that the coldest days of the year aren't the shortest days of the year. In fact, since the first day of winter a couple of weeks ago, the sun has been rising a bit earlier each day and setting a bit later. In other words, the days are getting longer. Though it seems that with more daylight hours the weather would warm up, it just continues to get colder. And that pattern will continue for another couple of months. Does that fascinate you, too? Maybe it's just me, but I think the way the whole seasons thing works is totally amazing.

Really, winter isn't all that bad, at least as long as I can mostly stay indoors, the furnace continues to do its job, and I have a warm coat for those occasions when I have to venture outside the house. And of course when there are those amazing clear nights and lengthening days with the promise of warmer weather to come. For both, I humbly thank their creator.
